Thank-You from More Than Me

Thanks to the efforts of every single person combined, More Than Me won the NBC Giving Awards on Friday night and won the grand prize of a million dollars which is going to helping more than a thousand young girls in Liberia get off of the streets, out of the slums and into schools where they will have the tools to make their dreams come true.

Dare to DREAM

To all of you who read my More Than Me posts, who voted and who shared them, for everyone who invested their energy into helping us win. Thank you. We all came together, thousands and thousands of us came together and really made it about more than any of us and that will go a long long way.

And the winner is… More Than Me! (photo c/o Frederick M. Brown, Getty Images All Rights Reserved)

Isn’t it amazing how much we can achieve when we all come together?

Now what else can we achieve? What else is possible?

Sending an abundance of love and light out to you all.

Lies, Truths, Untruths and Knowing the Difference…

Ask yourself a few questions:

How many lies have you bought into?

How many untruths have you taken on as your own?

What have you said you can’t do because of something you believe to be true?

What have you not done because of something you fear?

What are you looking outside of yourself to fix?

I’ve come to shed another layer of myself recently and a lot of it was to do with the lies I’d bought into over the years. Mainly the lies wrapped around my idea of family and who I was to my family. I’ve been told I’ve got issues and baggage and to be frank according to those I chose to be around, rather fucked up.

Now first of all, that’s an interesting point of view. Second, that says as much about those saying it as it does me. Third and most importantly, if I chose to take that on as truth, as my truth then what opportunities or possibilities was I allowing to pass by because I was choosing to be as f’ed up as people said I was…

Think about it.

I’ll ask again.

What lies or untruths have you taken on as your own? There are tons out there. There are millions of points of view and judgments that we can take on as our truth and this is exactly what prevents us from stepping into our true, authentic, beautiful, limitless selves!

Who have you identified as because of lies you’ve bought into? What are you not doing that is true to you?

We can start to let go of these untruths by looking at everything as an interesting point of view. Everything is an interesting point of view. Your views, everyone elses, it’s all an interesting point of view.

Everything is the opposite of what it appears to be – something to remember…

Remember the difference between what is light and what is heavy… The more you tap into that the more awareness will grow from it. If something is true for you it will feel light, if it is not true for you it will feel heavy and cause your energy (in and/or around you) to react in some way (keep in mind it is different for everyone). You can ask this all the time, I find that using this tool exercises your knowing and your awareness. Just feel the energy of the situation and see if that energy feels light or heavy.

Never ever ever question your knowing. Now I don’t mean what your ego thinks it knows, I mean what your awareness knows. You know those things you just know? Some refer to it as a gut feeling, others say it is being intuitive. Whatever it is, those times you just know something? Don’t question it. Actually I would even go to the extent of saying that it’s in your best interest to listen to and use your awareness.

Remember that everything you see in others is a reflection of yourself or an aspect of your own consciousness… There will be days when I see lots of beautiful people, there will be days where I see lots of angry people… Either way, those I see are just reflections of me… It’s a lot more difficult to judge people when you look at everyone and everything as being a part of you.

So, what lies or untruths have you taken on as your own, and more importantly, what lies and untruths are you willing to let go of right now?

Calling ALL Bloggers!!

Greetings awesome bloggers!

It’s not very often that we have the opportunity to come together for a cause that’s bigger than us, bigger than blogging and can have a seriously positive domino effect in the lives of others.

I am fortunate enough to be working with More Than Me, an education and girls’ empowerment non-profit is gaining notoriety through its guerilla-style marketing, inspiring hundreds of people to write “I am Abigail” on their foreheads and posting the photos on Facebook.

This really begs the question, “Who the heck is Abigail?”

Abigail was an orphan in West Point, Liberia. You may have read her letter in a previous article in the Huffington Post. At six, she was left with prostitutes. She learned to work the streets in order to get access to drinking water and food. Education was not an option.

Then Abigail met Katie Meyler, the founder of More Than Me, an organization dedicated to getting girls off the streets and into schools. Katie and Abigail became fast friends, and More Than Me has raised the money to put Abigail through school. She is learning to bake, and aspires to one day be a Senator, so she can, in turn, help other girls like her.

So, why are all these people also “Abigail”?

Abigail could be you. Abigail could be your sister, your niece, your student, or your neighbor. Remember, we live in a global community; there is no “me” without “we”, Abigail is because you are, and you are because Abigail is.

I’m asking, no pleading, no telling you to join the community! When you’ve done that, help the community grow by spreading our story. And most of all, get inspired!

Take 15 seconds (yes, just 15 seconds) to make the lives of these girls a bit better by doing two very simple and extremely meaningful things: VOTE NOW through Dec. 4 for Abigail and girls like her at voteabigail.org and… then share it with others. (Maybe even by making your OWN “I am Abigail” picture!)

Thanks please let me know if you’re interested or have questions!
Pass it on! We need YOU fellow bloggers and all of your friends! Let’s make this happen and change the world a little!

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what kind of a domino effect we can create!

Sending you all oodles of love and light!

Emotional Reactions and Interesting Points of View

Lots of things make me think. Events, situations, interactions, especially those that make me respond in a way that is different to the way I usually would.

There was a chain of events (sometimes it takes a chain for me to ask myself the questions needed to reflect). First there was a conversation with a friend. Then there was another conversation – this one I didn’t receive so well. Then there was the Weekly Photo Challenge theme – and it all came together (while having another conversation).

My photography. It’s something that’s incredibly precious to me. I see it as mine (this week’s photo challenge theme). It’s always been the way I express myself and the more I step into my photographer self, the more sensitive it is.

Throughout various conversations, whatever was being said hit a nerve. Good or bad, all interesting points of view created an emotional reaction.

It seems that I am incredibly guarded with this creative outlet I consider to be mine.

So… Where is the lesson in all of this?

Emotional reactions create unbalance. Balance is something I am working on acquiring. Detachment is needed here. I say detachment because the opinions of others are not things I need to live by. I do not need to hang on the every word of others. My art is my art and it is what it is. I do not need any validation.

If you take the good or bad, positive or negative connotations away from points of view, be it your point of view or that of others, then it is just an interesting point of view. Once it is an interesting point of view it is nothing more, nothing less. Herein lies the power of detachment.

If everything is an interesting point of view, I don’t need to have an emotional reaction which is really a waste of time and energy.

This is the lesson.

Stepping into your greatness requires a great deal of energy, time and focus. Emotional reactions take away from your energy. Points of view are just different ways of looking / perceiving / receiving something.

This is definitely something to remember, adding this to the other lessons and things to practice will make learning, growing and evolving that much easier.

Sending out a ripple of peace, love and light! Catch the ripple and pass it on!

Keep Calm and Don’t Forget!

Greetings beautiful ones!

I’ve been thinking. This blog is about lessons I’m learning along this road we call life. So I figured that I should share the lessons I learn as I go through them.

I feel like I made a boo boo recently. Allowing yourself to grow and evolve, reformatting your thought process, habits, behaviour etc takes practice. And it’s natural for us to sometimes resort to prior behaviours or coping mechanisms, especially during times of stress.

Let me explain. Saturday was an amazing day! I ran longer than I had done before, felt stronger, did some dancing in my front room (we should dance and move our bodies more!) and I got a photography job! How fantastic! How can it get any better? The photo gig went wonderfully and then I met with friends and we explored the night that was Nuit Blanche*.

On the street I found myself getting tense, then anxious, then angry, then just downright bitchy! I don’t like crowds. For some reason they stress me out. Years ago I was caught in a stampede caused by a shooting at a carnival and since then I’ve avoided crowds, I have also become a little claustrophobic. It’s not something that effects me on a day to day basis but I do get anxious from time to time.

Anyway, as the night wore on, the crowds got drunk and my patience dwindled down to zero. I went from being a happy, spontaneous photo-snapper to a bit of a monster! I totally lost my calm and balanced place and allowed myself to enter a negative, anxious, tense space which did nothing for me or those around me.

So! What are the lessons to be learned from this?

What energy space and consciousness can I be that will allow me to flow with balance and ease in all types of situations?

  • First of all, one of the four agreements comes to mind (taken from “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz) “Don’t take anything personally“. Once I found myself in that space, I took everything personally which is something I’ve trained myself not to do! Life is so much easier when you remember that nothing is about you, so there is no reason to take anything personally! Think about it. If people act based upon what is going on inside of them, from their perspective, then how can anything be about you? Remembering this is really freeing and quite liberating!
  • We are here to receive not resist: If you’re resisting something, it’s probably because there’s something in it for you to learn or grow from. When we resist, things become difficult. It’s as simple as that. When you feel yourself resisting, look for what it is you are supposed to be receiving and open yourself up to it.
  • Know when energies, thoughts and feelings are yours and when they are not. This takes practice. It has to become a habit because this tool works best when you use it all the time. It is quite possible that a lot of the energies and feelings weren’t mine. Taking them on as my own intensified those feelings. Had I identified them as something that didn’t belong to me, they wouldn’t have stuck. (If you haven’t tried this before, try it! It’s an amazing tool! Simply ask yourself if the energy/thought/feeling is yours and if it isn’t then return to sender!)

Remembering to use these tools as often as possible, especially in stressful or chaotic times is the lesson here. I don’t usually have a problem using them when I’m in my calm and balanced state but as soon as things get overwhelming and stressful everything I’ve learned tends to get thrown to the side and this is when I need to use them most!

We are human, we are constantly learning, we are going to forget tools at times. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to learn the lessons and keep moving forward.

Sending you all an abundance of love and light beauties!

Thank you for joining me on this journey.
